Behind the Photograph

One photograph, and the choices that made it work. Behind the Photograph opens up the story, light, equipment and lessons behind images from the Shutterbug News archive and our photography community.

At eye level with a reddish egret

The story

In her original account, Amber describes arriving at sunrise, lying low on a sandy beach and waiting for a reddish egret to move into position beside a tidal pool. Familiarity with the bird’s behavior helped her anticipate the moment. She reports that the photograph earned a blue ribbon at the Florida State Fair.

The light and composition

Soft early light, a clean background and the bird’s reflection are central to this image. Getting close to the ground brings the viewer into the bird’s world. The lesson is to consider camera height as carefully as the subject itself, while giving wildlife enough space to behave naturally.

The equipment and settings

Amber identifies a Sony A1 and a 600mm f/4 lens, used handheld. The original account does not give the shutter speed, ISO or shooting aperture; f/4 describes the lens, so it should not be assumed to be the exposure setting.

The edit

The source article does not describe a post-processing workflow for this photograph. Its account emphasizes choices made in the field: perspective, timing, light and background.

Try the idea

Find a safe position where you can lower your camera without approaching or disturbing an animal. Compare an eye-level frame with one made from your normal standing height. Watch what changes in the background, reflection and connection with the subject.
