Read Lighting Specifications With a Real Setup in Mind

Lighting specifications are useful when you know how they were measured. A brightness figure without distance, modifier or operating conditions is difficult to compare. Begin with the setup you need, then examine whether the published information describes something similar.

Compare like with like

Check the measurement distance and whether a reflector or other accessory was used. Notice the color-temperature setting for variable-color lights and whether output changes across the range. A headline number may represent one specific configuration.

Separate electrical power consumption from the amount of usable light reaching the subject. They are related aspects of a product, not interchangeable measurements of photographic usefulness.

Include the practical requirements

Look at power supply, battery options, cooling noise, dimensions and mounting. A light with suitable output may still be inconvenient if it needs a power arrangement unavailable on location or produces sound that complicates recording.

Review modifier compatibility and the cost of the complete setup. The lamp itself is only part of the system.

Verify with your own files

Where possible, rent, borrow or test the unit at the intended exposure settings. Examine skin tones, consistency and unwanted flicker rather than relying on a single metric. A specification can narrow the shortlist; a representative setup helps establish whether the light supports the work you need to deliver.
