Before a photograph becomes a file, a print or a page, it begins with a view. A new Nikon Museum exhibition will examine the piece of camera design that photographers use constantly but may rarely stop to consider: the viewfinder.

Inside the camera’s eye
Announced September 10, 2026, “Secrets Behind the Viewfinder” is scheduled to run from October 22, 2026, through February 27, 2027, at the Nikon Museum in Tokyo. Admission is free.
The exhibition is organized around three areas. Visitors will explore how an image forms on ground glass, examine the mechanisms used in rangefinder, single-lens reflex and mirrorless cameras, and compare dismantled examples of the Nikon SP and Nikon F. Nikon says actual cameras, cutaway models and demonstrations will help explain the differences.
History that changes how we look
For an experienced photographer, the attraction is more than nostalgia. A viewfinder is the boundary within which decisions become visible: what enters the frame, what stays outside it and when the shutter is released. Understanding the device can make those decisions feel less automatic.
The exhibition also offers a useful way into photographic history for younger visitors. A camera’s interior can seem abstract when it is reduced to a diagram. Seeing the physical components alongside the view they produce creates a more concrete connection between engineering and the act of composing a picture.
A rewarding approach would be to compare the viewing experiences before reading the specifications. Notice how each design directs attention, then look at the mechanism responsible. That turns a display of equipment into an exercise in visual awareness.
Planning a visit
The museum occupies the first floor of Nikon’s Global Headquarters/Innovation Center in Tokyo’s Shinagawa district. Its published schedule lists closures on Sundays, Mondays and public holidays, with additional closures possible. Visitors should check the museum’s calendar before making travel plans.
As of September 12, the exhibition is forthcoming. The announcement offers a reason to look ahead to a museum visit—and, in the meantime, to look through a familiar camera with fresh curiosity.
