Development image: Nikon, from its September 8, 2026 announcement. Final product appearance may differ.
Nikon’s September 8, 2026 development announcement outlines nine lenses in a new NIKKOR Z CINEMA T1.9 VV series. The company names a 50mm T1.9 VV and says the range is being designed for cinema and professional production workflows.
A larger image circle
According to Nikon, this will be the first NIKKOR series with an image circle covering RED’s V-RAPTOR [X] VV sensor, which measures 40.96 by 21.60mm. The company also says the lenses will incorporate autofocus. Those are design intentions in the announcement, rather than results from independent testing.
The published product image is a development illustration; Nikon cautions that the final appearance may differ. The release does not establish a complete list of focal lengths, local prices or shipping dates.
What a production team should compare
For filmmakers considering a future lens package, consistent operation across a set matters alongside optical specifications. Our suggested evaluation list includes focus-ring behavior, mount compatibility, support requirements, access to filters and how quickly the crew can change lenses. Those questions cannot be answered fully from an early product announcement.
Likewise, autofocus support does not by itself establish how a lens will perform during a particular rack focus or with a specific camera’s tracking settings. Plan to examine production samples and final compatibility documentation when available.
Development is not availability
Treat this news as a view of Nikon’s direction, not a promise of an immediately rentable or purchasable set. For an upcoming paid production, build the shooting plan around equipment that is available and has been checked in the intended configuration. Follow Nikon’s original announcement for subsequent official updates.
