Nikon has announced that firmware version 2.00 is in development for its ZR cinema camera, with release planned during 2026. The September 8 announcement previews new recording and monitoring options; it is not a notice that the firmware is available to download.
What Nikon plans to add
The update is intended to bring Log3G10 and REDWideGamutRGB recording to the H.265 format. Nikon also plans to let users choose High ISO noise reduction while recording H.265 Log footage and use focus peaking when recording R3D NE video.
For filmmakers, these are workflow changes to watch: recording format, color handling and focus aids all affect how a camera fits into a production. Performance and compatibility will need to be assessed when Nikon publishes the finished firmware and release notes.
Open-gate features have a different timetable
Nikon separately says open-gate recording and anamorphic de-squeeze are being developed for 2027. Those features should not be confused with the changes planned for version 2.00. Updates to the RED Control and RED Control Pro apps are also in development to support the ZR.
A wider cinema system is taking shape
In a separate announcement, Nikon said it is developing nine NIKKOR Z CINEMA T1.9 VV prime lenses, including a 50mm model. Nikon says the image circle will cover the RED V-RAPTOR [X] VV sensor. Pricing and a launch date were not provided in that announcement.
