A raw file extension does not tell the whole compatibility story. Different camera models and recording options can require different decoder support. Before replacing an editor or rebuilding a workflow, check the exact camera, file type and application version involved.
Start with the support table
Adobe’s Camera Raw support list identifies camera models and minimum versions. Compare that information with the software actually installed. Check any notes about special raw variants, compression choices or modes rather than assuming support for one file from a camera covers every possible recording option.
Use a newly captured sample and verify that it transfers intact from the card. Keep the native original. A failure to open a file can arise from a transfer problem as well as missing decoder support, so separate those possibilities before changing the archive.
Test conversion on copies
Adobe offers DNG Converter for supported camera-specific raw files, including as a compatibility route for older software. Read its compatibility settings and limitations before converting. A DNG extension does not guarantee that every application will interpret every converted or camera-created DNG in the same way.
Convert a small set of copies and compare metadata, orientation, crop and the adjustments you expect to carry through the workflow. Confirm that the intended editor opens and exports them correctly. Retain native files while evaluating the result.
Decide whether the workaround fits the job
Document the additional conversion step, storage needs and handoff requirements. If another person receives the files, confirm which version they can open and whether they need the camera originals as well. A successful local test is more useful than an assumption about universal compatibility.
Our guides to using difficult files to evaluate an editor and software upgrade decisions provide broader context. This is a compatibility assessment framework, not a claim that the featured Lake Tahoe photograph required conversion or was edited in a particular application.
