A travel photograph can depict a landmark far from the camera’s position. A caption that treats the two locations as identical can mislead a reader even when the image itself is accurate. Record the viewpoint and the depicted place separately while the details are still fresh.
Record what you know in the field
Keep the place name, date and a short note identifying the view. Use official signs, maps or another reliable local source to check spelling. If a name or identification remains uncertain, preserve that uncertainty rather than filling the gap from memory.
The IPTC Photo Metadata Standard distinguishes location information associated with creation from information about the location shown. Use the relevant fields deliberately. Coordinates recorded by the camera identify the capture position, not necessarily the center or identity of a distant subject.
Review precision before publication
Decide how much location detail serves the caption. A named lake or public viewpoint may be sufficient; precise coordinates can disclose a private address or a sensitive place unnecessarily. Keep a fuller internal record when appropriate and make a separate publication choice.
Apple documents controls for managing location metadata in Photos. Check the controls for your actual device or editing application, then inspect the exported or shared copy. Do not assume a website or messaging service will always remove the fields you intended to withhold.
Check the words and file together
Confirm that the final caption matches the selected photograph rather than a neighboring frame. Check date, orientation and place names after export. Avoid adding weather or seasonal claims that the file and field notes cannot support.
Our guides to delivery quality checks and project archiving help keep the caption attached to the right version. The Lake Tahoe image is identified from the site’s existing credited collection; this article does not invent its capture coordinates, date or route.
