A long lens earns its place in a wildlife photographer’s bag by making distant subjects accessible. Keeping that lens ready through a morning of walking, waiting and tracking is a different challenge. Fujifilm’s new FUJINON XF400mmF4.5 R LM OIS WR puts mobility at the center of its latest X Series announcement.

A dedicated prime for distant subjects

Announced September 4, 2026, the X-mount lens combines a fixed 400mm focal length with an F4.5 maximum aperture. On Fujifilm’s APS-C cameras, its angle of view is equivalent to approximately 609mm on full frame. Fujifilm lists the weight at 1,245g, excluding the caps and hood.

That specification makes the lens particularly interesting for photographers who work on foot. The practical question is whether a fixed, narrow field of view matches the distance at which their subjects usually appear. A prime can simplify a kit, but a bird suddenly moving closer may leave less room to reframe than a zoom would provide.

Stability and readiness in the field

Fujifilm specifies optical stabilization rated at up to 5.5 stops under CIPA testing, a linear autofocus motor, a focus preset and a focus limiter. The company also describes weather-resistant construction and a fluorine-coated front element.

These features address different problems. Stabilization helps manage camera movement; it does not stop a wingbeat or a sprinting athlete. Photographers will still need to balance shutter speed, aperture and sensitivity around the subject’s motion. A saved focus distance, meanwhile, could be useful when repeatedly covering a known perch or a predictable section of a track.

Price, timing and the next questions

Fujifilm announced a U.S. suggested price of $3,199.95 and planned availability in mid-September 2026. That is an announced schedule, rather than confirmation of stock at every retailer.

The specifications make a clear case for a portable specialist lens. What remains to be established through independent testing is how consistently it tracks difficult subjects and how it renders fine detail, especially in backlight. For prospective buyers, those results should matter more than the reach figure alone.
