A photograph increasingly needs to work in several shapes: a magazine spread, a website banner and a vertical social post. Lightroom’s August 2026 desktop update addresses that problem while also giving photographers more control over the boundaries of local edits.

Reframing beyond the original capture
Adobe lists Generative Expand among the additions in Lightroom desktop version 9.5. The tool extends the canvas beyond a photograph’s existing edges and fills the added space. It can also address empty areas created when correcting perspective.
Adobe’s documentation describes two methods: Firefly Fill & Expand and Content-Aware Fill. The Firefly option produces three variations and uses generative credits; Content-Aware Fill produces one variation and does not require credits. The controls sit within the Crop, Rotate, Geometry workflow.
For a commercial photographer adapting a background to a new layout, that could reduce a trip to another application. The meaningful distinction is that new edge content is created or filled in. It is not recovered evidence of something the camera recorded outside the frame.
Smaller controls, potentially important differences
The same update adds Feather and Edge sliders for masking. Adobe positions them as controls for refining boundaries and transitions. New camera and lens support is also included.
Those quieter improvements may prove just as useful as expanded canvases. A local adjustment should direct attention without announcing where the selection begins. A conspicuous boundary around a tree, face or mountain can undermine an otherwise careful edit.
A sensible way to evaluate the update
Start with a copy of a representative photograph and a specific output in mind. Compare the edited image at normal viewing size and at close magnification, paying attention to repeated textures, edges and the relationship between the new area and the original light.
For documentary work, retain the original capture and follow the publication’s rules on image alteration. For commissioned creative work, establish with the client whether generated additions are appropriate and how they should be described.
The update expands the choices available at the editing stage. The photographer’s responsibility is still to make those choices serve the image and its intended use. These release details refer to Lightroom on desktop; they should not be assumed to describe an identical feature set in Lightroom Classic.
