CIPA: Fixed-Lens Camera Shipments Rise Through August 2026

Fixed-lens digital camera shipments rose in CIPA’s January–August 2026 figures even as total camera unit shipments declined. The association’s August data, released October 1, provide a category-level view of manufacturers’ shipments, with an important warning about a change in the reporting group.

The year-to-date split

CIPA reports worldwide digital still camera shipments of 5,703,512 units for January–August, 96.8% of the comparable 2025 figure. Cameras with built-in lenses accounted for 1,694,289 units, or 115.3% of the prior-year level.

Mirrorless shipments totaled 3,703,211 units, 93.8% of the prior-year figure. Single-lens-reflex shipments were 306,012 units, 65.0%. These are shipment counts from the reporting companies, not a direct measurement of purchases by individual photographers.

Read the coverage note

The table states that an additional company joined the digital-camera statistics from January 2026 and that year-on-year figures reflect that change in coverage. Comparisons therefore do not represent an entirely unchanged reporting group. CIPA also specifies that its figures cover member companies, including overseas production.

Our reading is that the category split matters more than a simple claim that every part of the camera market is moving in the same direction. The numbers support different unit trends for built-in-lens, mirrorless and reflex cameras. They do not identify the sales performance of a particular model or explain every reason behind a buyer’s choice.

What the figures can and cannot answer

A shipment table can help readers frame questions about the industry. It cannot establish which camera is best for an assignment, what a local shop has in stock or whether a specific used body is good value. Those require different evidence.

For the buying side, read our guides to camera handling and controls and renting before purchasing. The manufacturing photograph is an industry illustration, not an image of CIPA’s reporting process or evidence of one company’s shipment totals. Figures and release date checked October 31, 2026.
