Give Portrait Subjects an Action Instead of a Complicated Pose

A long string of posing instructions can make a person concentrate on getting everything right instead of being present in the photograph. Begin with one easy action and refine the result gradually.

Choose an action that fits the person

Ask the subject to settle into a comfortable stance, look toward a particular point or turn slightly toward someone beside them. Explain the action in ordinary language and demonstrate it yourself when useful. Avoid physically repositioning a person without their permission.

Watch what happens between the instructed movements. A relaxed breath, a glance or a small shift of weight may create the expression you need. Give enough time for the person to complete the action rather than firing a new instruction before the first one has landed.

Refine one detail

Once the overall position feels comfortable, adjust a single element such as the direction of the face or the placement of a hand. Keep the change connected to what you see in the frame. If the pose becomes strained, return to the simple starting action.

Show a selected frame when it helps the subject understand your direction and feel involved. Ask whether the position is comfortable, especially when someone has mobility limitations or is holding a pose for longer than expected. The aim is not to make every person perform the same shape. It is to create a clear, reassuring process that allows their expression and presence to remain central.
